Handwoven textiles, from flock to loom

My small flock of sheep inhabits the fields around the steading where my weaving studio is based, on a hillside in the Scottish Highlands.

Using their fleece – raw, unspun and minimally processed – I hand-weave rugs and wall hangings.

Beautifully robust art textiles

When woven, raw wool makes a surprisingly strong and hard-wearing textile.

A tactile, low-impact addition to your home, my rugs can be used as functional objects. They are beautiful on the floor or over a chair.

But they are also art textiles, which make striking wall hangings.

The wool harvest

My primary material is the wool grown by my own flock, which I blade-shear by hand.

Weaving with raw, unspun fleece

The distance between the sheep and my loom is a hundred yards or so.

And, because almost nothing is done to the fleece before I start weaving with it, the natural colour and character of the wool is preserved in the finished pieces.

My guiding principle is truth to materials.

Commissions

Alongside rugs and wall hangings woven from fleece grown by my flock, I also take special commissions. I have made pieces for fellow shepherds (using raw wool from their own sheep) and collaborated with other artists.
